Thirteen Featured Faculty members were honored at Cougar football games throughout the fall.

“Athletic events provide a great opportunity to give visibility to our faculty and the academic enterprise, as a whole,” Provost Dan Bernardo says. “Having the attention of 38,000 loyal alumni and friends of WSU and shining a light on these deserving faculty is one of the most effective faculty recognition activities we have developed over the past couple of years.”

FACULTY PITCH IN TO REDUCE CLASSROOM MATERIAL COSTS

Faculty are stepping up for students by developing solutions to reduce classroom material costs and finding quality textbook alternatives. Kate Watts, Matthew Bumpus, and Richard Zack discussed the process of exploring open education resources and improving their respective courses by moving away from expensive, traditional textbooks.

YASINITSKY NOMINATED FOR PULITZER PRIZE IN MUSIC

WSU Regents Professor Greg Yasinitsky was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in Music for his Jazz Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. Yasinitsky’s composition premiered in January 2017 and was performed by the Baton Rouge Symphony, conducted by Timothy Muffitt with soloist Willis Delony. Muffit and Delony submitted the nomination for the award.

COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS

The Office of Assessment of Teaching and Learning hosted the inaugural Celebration of Assessment Excellence last month to honor faculty for their outstanding efforts in that area. Provost Bernardo and other University leaders recognized 16 undergraduate programs with exemplary assessment practices and for playing key roles in fulfilling WSU’s educational mission.

The WSU Foundation honored Debra Sanders with its Faculty/Staff Outstanding Service Award during the Foundation’s fall meeting. Sanders is an accounting professor in the Carson College of Business at WSU Vancouver and has taught accounting at WSU for more than 30 years.

Jill McCluskey, Distinguished Professor of Sustainability in the School of Economic Sciences, was appointed to the National Academy of Science’s Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources. In her role on the board, McCluskey will help advance research frontiers, providing advice on requests for inquiries from Congress, federal and state agencies, and other groups, while also identifying frontiers of science and policy in the food, agricultural, and natural resources system.
