About the event

The WSU School of Music and the Center for Arts and Humanities is proud to co-sponsor musician and scholar Ashley Killam. As a part of the WSU School of Music’s “Music: A Mosaic of Experiences” lecture series, Ashley will present the lecture “Fanfare for the Unheard: A Voice for Emerging Stars in Music.” Fanfare for the Unheard is a presentation meant to showcase the voice of underrepresented composers and their music. The presentation is appropriate for all musicians, irrespective of instrument/voice type/genre. She speak about where she got her start and how her personal research has grown to include underrepresented composers of all genders, sexualities, races, heritages, and backgrounds. Along with showcasing composers and talking about bringing new music into the world, she will share a few struggles she and colleagues have faced over the years as marginalized folks and how we can hold ourselves and others accountable with our words and actions. She will provide tools that educators, performers, and academics can use to not only reflect on the music we program, but also to establish lasting relationships with these composers.
