Every member of our Cougar community has had to make significant changes due to COVID-19. We know it has dramatically altered your Spring 2020 plans including how you would take classes, how you were going to stay engaged and connected with your peers, and most importantly, where you were going to live, sleep, and eat for the remainder of the semester.

Our first priority has been to ensure that you could successfully finish your last six weeks of instruction and could continue on your way to graduation. We hope your first three days of distance learning have gone well.

Now, onto a very important update regarding university-owned residence halls and apartments.

If you are staying in one of our university-owned residence halls or apartments and are already in Pullman, you may stay here. Governor Inslee’s Stay Home Stay Healthy order is designed to minimize the spread of COVID-19.

If you are not in Pullman and you were living in a university-owned residence hall or apartment, you do not need to return to Pullman, move your belongings, terminate your contract, or check out at this time. Your belongings can stay in university-owned residence halls and apartments for the time being.

Students, and their families, have told us they have different needs and wanted us to consider a variety of options. We took the time necessary to map out several options to accommodate the widest possible situations of our students.
You have the time you need to make a decision about what is best for the current circumstances.

Before you make a decision, here are some things to know:
  1. If you lived in a residence hall in for Fall 2019, the first year live in requirement (FLIR) for Spring 2020 is fulfilled.
  2. You will not be charged a termination fee.
  3. You should check your current housing and/or dining balances using myWSU. If you have questions about your balance(s) you should email Housing and Dining Financial Services at hd.finance@wsu.edu
  4. We need to know your plan by April 10, 2020. The link at the end of this notice will walk you through a series of choices regarding your current housing and dining contracts.

Please understand that the university’s actions, including move-out, will be determined by federal, state, and local public health directives and guidelines. You will receive more specific communication related to your choices in the future.
If you are currently living in university-owned residence halls or apartments and plan to remain there for the remainder of your contract, you will continue to be charged for housing and dining (if applicable).

If you would like to terminate your RESIDENCE HALL CONTRACT. You have the following options:
  1. Credit: A prorated amount, as of March 13, 2020, will be applied to your university account for the 2020-2021 Academic Year. A credit will be issued to your university account before the end of the Spring 2020 semester. This credit will be applied to your university account for Fall 2020 and will not impact your financial aid or loan eligibility for the next academic year.
  2. Refund: A prorated refund will be calculated as of March 13, 2020. Refunds will be issued to you before the end of the Spring 2020 semester.
If you are terminating your housing contract, your dining plan will also be terminated (including Base Fee and RDA Resident Dining Account), you have the following options:
  1. Credit: A prorated amount of the Base Fee, as of March 13, 2020, will be applied to your university account for the 2020-2021 Academic Year. If you have unused dollars of RDA, those dollars will be credited for the 2020-2021 Academic Year as well. This credit will be applied to your university account for Fall 2020 and will not impact your financial aid or loan eligibility for the next academic year.
  2. Refund: A prorated refund will be calculated as of March 13, 2020. If you have unused dollars of RDA, those dollars will be refunded as well. Refunds will be issued to you by the end of the Spring 2020 semester.
  3. Refund for Base Fee and Donate RDA to Cougs Feeding Cougs: A prorated amount of the Base fee, as of March 13, 2020, will be refunded to your university account. Your RDA balance donation to Cougs Feed Cougs would provide funds to eligible students who need assistance in securing food.
If you would like to terminate your UNIVERSITY-OWNED APARTMENT CONTRACT, you will not be assessed a termination fee. If you will not be returning to Pullman after the Stay Home, Stay Healthy order is lifted, you need to return your keys. Your personal items can stay in your apartment through the end of your contract. You will not be assessed rent fees if your keys are returned. To address your specific situation, please contact housing.apartments@wsu.edu.

You will need to submit this survey by April 10th.
Additional Information for those not currently in Pullman

Once you let us know what you plan to do, you will receive specific communication related to your choice.

Time frames for move-out will be determined by federal, state, and local public health directives and guidelines. Move-out schedules for university-owned residence halls will provide general time frames to ensure proper social distancing in our communities. For university-owned apartments, residents are expected to move out by the end of your contract. We recognize that each student’s situation may require adjustments in those timelines and will accommodate when necessary and within reason.

As a reminder, you do not need to move out or remove your items right now. Your belongings may stay in place for the time being. For those of you who have already left and moved your belongings, you will receive additional communication about checkout procedures and how to return your keys.

You will need to submit this survey by April 10th.
