Support International Students

International Programs initiatives advance education, research, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. With your support, the Office of International Programs will continue to contribute to a stronger knowledge-based economy in Washington state and the world.

URGENT NEED: International Student Aid Fund

Many of our international students and scholars face hardship when they come here through no fault of their own. They have faced political disruptions and outright wars in their home countries, economic reversals and currency devaluations, and a global pandemic. Exacerbating hardship, many have work restrictions that prevent them from supporting themselves.

We ask the Coug family to come together and support the International Student and Scholar Emergency Aid Fund (International Student Aid Fund). This fund will provide direct payments for housing, food, medical care, and other necessities on behalf of our international Cougs who need our help. (Scholarship athletes and WSU employees may not be eligible for support from this fund.)

Will you help?

Bringing the world to WSU, and WSU to the world

The fabric of Washington State University is enriched by the global community it serves. Students, scholars, faculty, staff, and researchers from all corners of the world study, teach, work, and create in an environment that is inclusive and innovative. The Office of International Programs is a catalyst for the WSU global community to grow and prosper in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.

Your support enables international students to thrive while at WSU. It also encourages WSU students to study abroad and broaden their horizon as global citizens.

Global Learning

With greater resources for global learning, WSU could help students in many ways:

  • Integrate more international study across the curriculum
  • Create service learning opportunities tied to study abroad experiences
  • Develop intercultural competencies and prepare to become global leaders
  • Build an endowed study abroad scholarship program to provide WSU students the opportunity to experience the world
  • Encourage international student enrollment and engagement
  • Provide opportunities to interact with and learn from fellow students from 110+ countries
  • Support programs that challenge students to address critical global problems and help international students feel at home in the United States

Study abroad scholarships

WSU Education Abroad Endowment – In Memory of Ann Barney

WSU donors Victoria, Patrick, and Daniel Barney established this scholarship endowment in memory of their daughter and sister Ann Barney. Ann died in a car accident in 2008 while planning her junior year abroad.

The Barney family endowed this fund not only to honor Ann’s memory, but also to create a sustainable source of scholarship funding for education abroad. Thanks to the family’s generosity, the education abroad office awards grants annually from a continually growing endowment.

WSU Education Abroad Endowment – In Memory of Aaron Iverson

WSU donors David and Deborah Iverson established this endowment in memory of their son, Aaron, who died in 1996 at the age of 22.

The fund provides deserving WSU students with the opportunity to experience travel adventures similar to those that Aaron enjoyed during his short life.

It gives preference to high-need students who have not previously traveled outside North America and who express philanthropic interests. It also seeks students planning to spend an entire academic year abroad.

Scholarships and aid for international students

International Student Scholarship Fund

WSU alumnus Ricky Tsang established the International Student Scholarship Fund for non-U.S. citizens who are enrolled as students at Washington State University. Mr. Tsang came to WSU from Hong Kong. After graduating, he built a distinguished career at Microsoft.

Like Ricky Tsang, many international students struggle with finances, cultural differences, and isolation far from home. The International Student Scholarship Fund was established to help international students bridge the gap and ease their financial burden while at WSU.

IALC Scholarship Fund

The Intensive American Language Center (IALC) Scholarship was funded in memory of Teerawat (Roman) Choosanguan, a student from Thailand who died while attending the IALC.

The scholarship is awarded to non-citizen students studying English at IALC.

Violet M. Yates Endowment

The Violet M. Yates Endowment supports scholarships for non-U.S. citizens who are attending the Intensive American Language Center (IALC) at Washington State University. Preference will be given to women, including students, prospective students, or female family members of international students.

International Cougar Program

A gift to the international Cougar Program enables WSU leaders to act strategically when opportunities or challenges arise. This could mean attracting world-class faculty from around the world, creating or supplementing creative programs with a global emphasis, or providing scholarship and fellowship support for students and faculty.

International Program Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is available to students from foreign countries to travel to WSU for their studies, and to regularly enrolled WSU students for foreign travel for study purposes.
